Textron gse: smart sense anti-collision system

Klaus Dengler, Managing Director Europoles Suisse GmbH), René Vuillemin, (Managing Director Europoles Suisse GmbH)

Textron GSE’s Smart Sense system is the new standard for protecting aircraft from damage caused by belt loader operator error, providing ultimate protection for ramp operations.

Smart Sense slows and stops the belt loader upon approaching the aircraft, providing safety for ground handling crews and preventing costly damage to aircraft and surrounding equipment. Using ultrasonic sensors located on the front of the conveyor, Smart Sense can determine aircraft proximity. Signals are sent from the sensors to the transmission to control speed. Indicator lights on the front of conveyor and on the back of the TUG 660 provide ground handlers excellent visibility of the signals.

Speed is limited to 3.5 mph (5.6 kph) at all times for safe operation. When approaching the aircraft within 6 ft (1.8 m) the vehicle is slowed to 0.5 mph and the indicator light will flash yellow. Once the conveyer is within 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) of the aircraft, the vehicle may no longer move forward. A red indicator light will appear if the conveyer is within 2 inches (5 cm) of an object, if the operator leaves the seat, or if the system has a fault requiring a check.
