Created in 1999, the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) has the mandate to promote the safe, regular and efficient use and development of aviation inside and outside Zimbabwe, as well as to advise the government of Zimbabwe on all matters relating to domestic and international aviation. CAAZ headquarters sit within the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport building in Harare.

The Authority’s core functions are:

  • Airport Development and Management;
  • Airspace Management;
  • Air Service Development and Facilitation;
  • Aviation Industry Regulation; and
  • Advisory Services

CAAZ operates eight (8) airports in the country, which are strategically positioned to save major tourist and investment destinations. These include three (3) major international airports namely Robert Gabriel Mugabe, Victoria Falls and J.M.Nkomo and five (5) regional airports namely Masvingo, Hwange, Kariba, Charles Prince and Buffalo Range.

With so much renewed optimism surrounding the Zimbabwean aviation industry, CAAZ is continuously improving airport and air navigation infrastructure. In 2016 CAAZ completed and commissioned the upgraded Victoria Falls International Airport. The new airport now boasts of a new 4000 metres long by 60 metres wide runway which can accommodate aircraft in the class of the B747 or equivalent and a new state of the art international passenger terminal building and a refurbished domestic passenger terminal building with a combined capacity to handle 1.5 million passengers per annum. The upgrading of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport to increase passenger capacity from 2.5 million to 6 million passengers per annum is currently underway.
